This blog's for you! & Coffee Road Trip: Durham

Coffee shop fans, this weekend is what I'm talking about! It's exactly why I created this blog - to let you know about the coffee shop events happening every day of the week at locally owned Triad Coffee Shops.

If you didn't get to check out one of the bazillion events happening this weekend, then I hope you have a better weekend in the near future! As for me, this was an animal rescue weekend, so I didn't get to attend any events . . . but the weekend isn't over yet!

http://www.joevangogh.com/
On the bright side, I did get a long-awaited visit to Joe Van Gogh in Durham. Although I could only stay long enough to have a muffin and half a cup of coffee, it was a great pick-me-up in the middle of a hectic day that involved about 300 miles of driving. Tell me, fans, how on earth can we do that kind of serious driving without a coffee break?

Joe Van Gogh is a great little haven near some of the best academic opportunities in our state - Duke U. and the School of Math and Science. Hold on, now UNC fans. I'll have a coffee road trip to Chapel Hill soon enough. For you State fans, check out our Coffee Road Trip: Raleigh. Wake fans - check out the Coffee Shop Guide for the great shops right here in the Triad.

Anyway, I enjoyed some locally roasted coffee at a locally owned coffee shop that's saving lives by donating to the fight against cervical cancer in developing, coffee-growing countries. Who says coffee drinkers can't save the world?? Just keep the coffee coming & we'll do the rest!

All in all, CoffeeCat is thankful for many things today - including the folks who support locally owned small businesses. If you want to be in the know, follow my blog and join us on Facebook.

Do You Get This? Hellooooooo?

Listen up, coffee fans. If you've been paying attention to the blogspot, you know that I advocate saving some coins all week long so you can get your coffee shop fix & entertainment on the weekends. HAVE YOU SEEN the entertainment values on the Events Page? Am I kidding? No way!

Concerts for 0 to 8 bucks at Triad Coffee Shops. Count 'em! That leaves you plenty of dough for a beverage, snacks, and tips to the barista and band. Why pay 100 buckaroos for a big fancy celebrity at the coliseum when you can see big talented celebrity-to-be at a Triad Coffee Shop?

Bypass the ringing in your ears and enjoy some ear-saving, volume-controlled, family-friendly (most of the time!) and culturally enriching entertainment at Triad Coffee Shops.

'Nuf said?

(p.s. If there's a big fancy celebrity playing at the coliseum who started out in coffee shops, let me know! I'd like an exclusive interview for the blogspot!)

Start with a blender . . .

add espresso, strawberries, milk, ice, spiced chai latte, and a shot of caramel. Oh, yeah, and some of those things from the Events Page. What would you get, besides a bizarre smoothie? A blogspot scavenger hunt!

Here's what came out of the blender for me:
  1. a game of Scrabble en français
  2. an ox playing ukulele under a magnolia tree
  3. fruit smoothies with Dr. McDreamy (pause here for daydream)
  4. Tony Buckman trivia open mic
  5. Dr. McSteamy poetry slam (sonnets, anyone?)
  6. wolves do the Gallery Hop (kinda like the Lindy hop, but post modern)
  7. free book tasting with gelato on the side
  8. green bean jam (is this sold at the Farmer’s Market?)
  9. High Water on the patio (who cares if we're wet, we've got coffee!)
Now you try it, fans. Blend your own coffee shop adventure!
By the way, if anyone has tried my smoothie recipe, let me know - is it safe to drink?

Boo!

A friendly face from Krankie's
The first coffee shop Halloween party is posted on the Events page. CoffeeCat's favorite holiday is just two weeks away!

Krankie's Airstream kicked off the season with its annual pumpkin carving event. The Airstream is next door to Reynolda Farmer's Market. Where else can parents kick back with a cold coffee beverage while the kids carve pumpkins in the sun?
Backstreet Buzz is planning its annual Halloween party. Last year, iCoffee hosted trick-or-treating. Some events might be on Saturday, some might be on Sunday, so we will post the details as soon as we find them.

Coffee shops, you can post your events here in the comments or on our Facebook page.

[MORE] Stuffed Again!

Brace yourselves for another STUFFED coffee shop weekend. Check out the Events Page - bullet points under a date mean "WHEW, look at all these places to be and people to see, all in one day!"

For starters, you can fill up on Casanova's fudge in exchange for a donation of books to Lewisville Library. Nothing goes better with fudge than coffee, a good book, a warm blanket, and a snow storm . . . oops, sorry folks, it's October! Let's hold that until January. For now, we'll take sunny days, fudge, and festivities at the historic Lewisville Mill.

Lab wants some latte
I'm still looking for my time travel machine for Saturday night. Let me know if you see one on e-bay. I hope you coffee shop fans are having as much fun as I am!! Bzzzzzz.

Don't forget the events on the Howls & Meows page, too!
And a shout out to Smitty's Notes awesome event calendar at http://www.smittysnotes.com/.

Conversations in a Cafe

Here's proof that CoffeeCat isn't the only one who sees life happening at coffee shops. A world-premiere play set in a coffee shop starts this weekend at Korner's Folly in Kernersville. Conversations in a Cafe follows eight characters who cross paths at Newton's Cafe, a small coffee shop in New York City. All characters are in one phase or another of seeking love, lust, a relationship or even just a friend, while their waitress contributes and comments.

New Coffee Shop Stuff This Week

A smattering of news & info for coffee shop fans this week.

Simplyummy Cafe is giving a prize to one lucky fan who posts on fb, "why do you love simplyummy?"

photo uploaded from Chelsee's Coffee
- just one of the fabulous coffee shops that
brings CoffeeCat to downtown WS!

Community Arts Cafe is now complete --- with a coffee bar! See the Coffee Shop Guide for address. Be sure to subscribe to the CAC weekly newsletter for a listing of upcoming events, delivered on Thursdays so you can plan your weekend.

Cafe Roche now offers bees wax lip balm and hand cream. Your skin will appreciate these on those breezy, cool days when you're walking the bow wow and stopping by for a treat!

CoffeeCat likes church, but wonders how everyone else can sit still so long, so early in the day, without caffeine. Is it just me? Maybe not! Chelsee's Coffee hosts a Moravian church service every Sunday morning. All customers are welcome to come in for coffee, even if you don't stay for church. Hmmm, maybe I'll give this a try.

Feed Your Brain at Triad Coffee Shops. Tired of TV, computer games, football and other less-than-entertaining-entertainment? Choose your challenge! Monday night offers a choice of French conversation or trivia, Wednesdays are Scrabble nights, and Thursdays offer a book club. Not to mention the mentally refreshing art, music, and literature you'll find at Triad Coffee Shops. Check the Events Page for details!

This is just a smattering of info! Please share your info with CoffeeCat so everyone can check it out!

Kick off the holiday weekend

There are more coffee shops
in downtown WS than you can
shake a biscotti at!
There are plenty of activities to kick off the holiday weekend for those who are staying in the Triad! Check out the updated events page. Friday night is packed full. In downtown Winston-Salem, we have a poetry meetup at a coffee shop CoffeeCat just posted on the Coffee Shops Guide, the first Friday gallery hop, and free wine tasting at Caffe Prada. Not to mention, our long-standing yummy coffee shops in downtown are there waiting for you with iced coffee & espresso drinks!

Saturday night, the Astanza Project is playing at Tate Street -- if you're wondering what "world music" sounds like, well, get off the couch and go listen!

It's officially September, so get out there and take advantage of all the events crammed into the busiest month of the fall! If you know of more events this weekend, post 'em here for everyone to see!

World Peace at your local coffee shop?

NASA photo uploaded from about.com

A coffee shop is its neighborhood.

To be successful, a coffee shop has to have something in common with its neighbors, something that attracts them to come in, come back, and spend money. My neighborhood doesn't have a locally- owned coffee shop, so I enjoy trying out other people's neighborhoods.

For example, I enjoy The Coffee Break, Tate Street, and Coffeeology, all located in the UNC-G neighborhood. All of these appeal to students, professors, and the professionals who live in the surrounding neighborhoods. Even so, each shop has a different look & different energy.

iCoffee in Summerfield is in the neighborhood of Lake Brandt, so it appeals to people on their way to the lake. It's also a hub for the Northern Guilford community and reaches out to the students and families through student art displays, concerts, and gatherings for sports teams.

Sitting on the patio of Krankie's in Winston-Salem, I noticed that the county detention center and one building of the Piedmont Triad Research Park rise over the old industrial city block on which Krankie's is situated. What kind of neighborhood is made up of a jail, a biomedical research building, railroad tracks, and a coffee shop in an old warehouse?

Spend some time listening to the poets and musicians who perform at Krankie's, and you'll feel the neighborhood. It's the neighborhood of innovation, energy, and creativity. It's a crossroads of artistic, scientific, and ordinary people. Some poets rhyme about life on the streets and how it landed them in that jail across Chestnut Street. They're using their energy and creativity to innovate new, better lives for themselves, and they're not afraid to get on stage and let people know.

Other poets rhyme about diseases and human conditions that are being confronted head-on at the research park. While scientists in those labs develop new, life-saving drugs and grow human organs to replace diseased organs, a poet named Eurycide White shouts a poem called, "**** you, cancer."  The disease took people she loved, and across the street, strangers are taking on disease. Does it get any more real than this?

Coffee shops don't rate the same coverage on front pages and newscasts as health care reform, Middle Eastern peace talks, or the war in Afghanistan. You and I know that. But real life is happening in and around Triad Coffee Shops. Take some time to explore your neighborhood coffee shop, or someone else's. You never know - you just might be within arm's reach of world peace or a cure for cancer.

Coffee Shop Lovers' Treat

One of the great things about coffee shops is they attract people who like to read. Many coffee shops have a bookshelf for patrons to browse while they visit. There's usually a copy of the daily paper for anyone to enjoy. And there are games like Scrabble and Scattergories, which show that word lovers gather in these places.

So coffee shop lovers, in my book, are going to love the BookMarks Book Festival in the downtown arts district of Winston-Salem on Sept. 11. It's not just that it will be packed with best-selling authors, book-related activities for kids, workshops for aspiring writers, and places to buy books. It's also within walking distance of Chelsee's Coffee and Brew Nerds, and not much further away are Krankie's and Caffe Prada. CoffeeCat is anticipating an iced coffee drink!

Among the authors scheduled to attend is the wonderful, talented, funny, and animal-loving creator of Mutts comic strip - Patrick McDonnell. Yes, in Winston-Salem {Sept. 5 update: McDonnell has posted on his blog about the festival}! I recently subscribed to the Daily Mutts by e-mail so that at least once a day, I'll have an e-mail that makes me smile!

For coffee shop fans anywhere in the Triad, BookMarks is worth the drive to Winston-Salem and can double as a Coffee Road Trip. Fans, tell me who you can't wait to see at BookMarks!

Coffee Shop on the Big Screen: Post 2

Coffee fans, if you missed the premiere of Everything We Forgot We Remember And Forget . . . sorry! Some of the funniest lines were delivered in the Cafe Roche scene.

"You brought wings in here?"
"Yes, they don't sell them here!"

And, "that was lie."
"That was a lie."
"That was a lie."

If you're thinking you had to be there . . . you're right! But writer/director/barista Tim Hall is giving everyone a chance to be part of his feature film, Ordinary Wilderness, by donating to the production costs. People in Winston-Salem are making things happen in & for this city, so let's CHIP IN!

Triad coffee shop on the big screen

I love Triad coffee shops! Why didn't I think of making a film at one? Why?

Uploaded from Facebook events page
Obviously, I'm not a talented School of the Arts student who happens to be a talented Cafe Roche barista.

Everything We Forgot We Remember and Forget, a film made on location at Cafe Roche, will be screened in Winston-Salem's newest theater. Let's be the first to see this on the big screen!

CoffeeCat gives props to the creative people who think of such great ideas and work hard to make them a reality. The only thing that could be better than making a film in a coffee shop is watching it in that very same coffee shop! But CoffeeCat knows more fans will fit into the cinema, so everyone come and see!

You'll also get to see another short film, September.

August 22, 9 - 10 p.m.
a/perture cinema, 311 West 4th St.
Created By Tim Hall, Daniel Hansen, Saul McSween
Starring: Abigail Leigh, W. Scott Parker III, Jeff Parker, Gene Francis

Coffee Road Trip: breaking news

Counter Culture Coffee Brew Down – This Thursday

Thursday, August 12, at the Durham, NC, Training Center
Please RSVP on facebook

What rhymes with . . . ?

Not much time
to write on the blogspot
CoffeeCat is rhymin'
at a Triad coffee shop

If you are tired of not-so great summer blockbusters or you need lively entertainment to get you through the dog days, Triad Coffee Shops have something for you! Tate Street hosts the Triad Poetry Meetup on 4th Saturdays and Krankie's hosts the Piedmont Slam on 4th Thursdays. Details on the Events Page.

These events are lively, thought-provoking entertainment for grown-ups who like to laugh, cry, think, and marvel at the amazing talent we have in the Triad. Spoken word and open mic works are NOT to be confused with those poems you read in English class . . . trust me, I hated every one of 'em (sorry, Shakespeare. Ahem, just kidding, professors).

And, hey, if you start now, you might write the killer haiku that wins a prize at Krankie's. Seriously, the haikus at Krankie's are hilarious. Anyone in the audience can write a haiku on a napkin or scrap of paper and give it to the slam master to read on stage.

Are there other coffee shops that host events for peeps with mad word skills? If so, please let us know so CoffeeCat can spread the word (and spare you her bad slang and even worse poetry!).

Just Another Manic Monday?

Could it have been manic if this song didn't get into my head until the end of the day? I guess not!

It's never a good day when this song is on your mind from the alarm clock until lunch. The next time it happens to you (and it will), CoffeeCat insists that you punch out, leave work, go to the nearest coffee shop, and take a real coffee break. Not a coffee break at the office coffee machine, but a break over freshly ground, freshly brewed, organic, fair trade coffee and a few words with the barista about the weather.

Try it. You'll like it. And if you forget, you can look up this post by its title and be reminded that it is OK to take a coffee break. You will be more productive, happier, and nicer to your coworkers when you return to work. If you're not, then you need to select a coffee shop further away from the office. Look for upcoming Coffee Road Trip posts for suggestions.

In the meantime, I'm happy to see more coffee shop events popping up on Facebook pages. I'm adding them to the Events page as I find them, but if I miss one, please let me know. Be sure to friend your favorite coffee shops so you can stay tuned . . . and look for Triad Coffee Shops coming soon to FB!

Do your part to make the world a better place: take your grumpy self to the coffee shop for an attitude adjustment. I've tried it and it works (only a few people close to me would disagree!).

Latte art and fine art - Saturday!

latte art created by the coffee
artists at Cafe Roche

Thanks to a gem in the heart of Ardmore, you can keep the gallery hop going one more night & get your caffeine fix, too. Cafe Roche always has art on display from local artists and kicks off each show with a party! Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. is the opening for Beamer Aston's work. Enjoy works of art & coffee, including creative combinations of espresso, ice cream, and baked goodies.
